At Skin Cancer Canberra Clinic, we’re passionate about helping our patients take control of their skin health. One of our recent cases highlights just how crucial early detection can be.
A lovely patient recently visited us for a full-body skin check with Dr. Pedro Valente. During the consultation, Dr. Valente identified a suspicious lesion on her left helix (the outer rim of her ear). A biopsy was performed, and the results revealed concerning features consistent with melanoma in situ. This is a diagnosis that underscores the importance of regular skin checks.

This was the spot that resulted in a biopsy which resulted in diagnosis.
What Is Melanoma in Situ, Stage 1?
Melanoma in situ is the earliest stage of melanoma. “In situ” means that the cancerous cells are confined to the epidermis, the top layer of skin, and have not yet invaded deeper layers or spread to other parts of the body. At this stage, the risk of metastasis (spreading) is minimal, but if left untreated, melanoma in situ can progress to invasive melanoma, which can be life-threatening.
In this patient’s case, her decision to prioritize her skin health made all the difference. The melanoma was detected early, giving her the best chance of a full recovery.
What Are the Surgery Options for Melanoma in Situ?
When melanoma in situ is diagnosed, surgical removal is the gold-standard treatment to ensure all cancerous cells are eliminated. Here are the most common surgical approaches:
1. Wide Local Excision:
A margin of healthy skin around the lesion is also removed to ensure all cancerous cells are cleared. For melanomas in areas like the ear, the margin is carefully planned to balance aesthetics and effective removal.
2. Mohs Surgery (used selectively for certain cases)
This is a precise surgical technique where layers of skin are removed and examined under a microscope until no cancerous cells remain. Mohs surgery is particularly useful in cosmetically sensitive areas like the face and ears.
In this case, Dr. Valente has scheduled a wide local excision for next week to remove the lesion, ensuring the melanoma is fully excised while preserving the integrity of the ear.
Why Do Regular Skin Checks Matter?
This patient’s story serves as a reminder that early detection truly saves lives. A seemingly minor lesion on the ear turned out to be a serious condition that, if left unchecked, could have progressed into a more dangerous stage. Regular skin checks allow for early identification and intervention, giving patients the best outcomes.
Tips to Protect Your Skin
Canberra residents enjoy plenty of sunshine, but it’s important to protect your skin all year round:
- Apply Sunscreen: At minimum Use SPF 30+ or higher daily, and don’t forget areas like your ears, neck, and hands.
- Wear Protective Clothing: Hats, sunglasses, and UV-protective clothing can shield your skin from harmful rays.
- Seek Shade: Avoid Regular Skin Checks: direct sun exposure during peak hours (10 am–4 pm).
- Regular Skin Checks: Schedule an annual full-body skin check with a qualified skin cancer doctor, or more often if you have a history of skin cancer or excessive sun exposure.
