To our lovely Canberra folk, please don’t put off scheduling your skin check. Skin cancer doesn’t discriminate, whether you’re young or old, it can affect anyone. You might already have a basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), or melanoma without realizing it.
The prompt for this blog is a recent case at our clinic. Our skin cancer specialist, Dr. Valente, had to share difficult news with a young patient who, at only 27 years old, was diagnosed with stage 1 melanoma. This patient had never had a skin check before and booked one with us out of precaution. During his examination, Dr. Valente identified an unusual spot behind the patient’s ear, performed a biopsy, and unfortunately, it came back positive. Thankfully, because we caught it early, surgery can now be performed to address it before it progresses.
This case reminds us how vital regular skin checks are, especially since most people only book in when they notice symptoms. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear; take proactive steps now and get checked every year.
What to Expect at Your Skin Check
The cost of a head-to-toe skin check at Skin Cancer Canberra Clinic is $250, with Medicare rebates of $82.90, resulting in an out-of-pocket cost of $167.10. Skin cancer is generally diagnosed through physical examination and biopsy, a quick and straightforward procedure where part or all of a suspicious spot is removed and sent to a lab. Results typically take about a week.
When considering treatment, Dr. Valente takes into account several factors, including the type, location, and size of the cancer, your age, health, and personal preferences. If a follow-up is needed to remove a lesion, we handle all excisions in-house. We’ll inform you upfront of any additional costs and available rebates.
Whether this is your first skin check or you’ve had many, we encourage everyone to make skin checks a regular part of their health routine.
